Malsi e Madhe trip
Tirana – Shkodra – Tamara – Lepushe – Vermosh – Maja e Vajuses
Itinerary
We will leave Tirana to head toward the North of the country, with the first stop at Shkoder. Know as the biggest city of the North, it has traditionally been the cultural, financial, and political center of the Albanian North. Short Stop in the city of Shkoder for a tour of Shkoder where we can visit Rozafa Casttle and drink something in Shkodra Bazar
Leaving Shkoder behind we will head more to the Northwest highland of Albania. Often known as Kelmend, this area is one of the most scenic and dramatic. Sharp limestone mountainous formations, going as high as the sky, where in their feet, soft valleys and small pastoral villages are living their day-to-day life. This is also a region highly known also for its cultural values when in 2022 its typical Female dress “Xhubleta” became part of UNESCO Heritage. Or for more, we can mention the history of “Nora e Kelemendit”. Lëpusha is one of the most spectacular natural gems of the famous Kelmend region. Also, muse about many landscape photographers and objects of countless spectacular captures! The rugged landscape, fresh air, and rare tranquility of this area make it a go-to destination for outdoor lovers. The destination for the day will be the Waterfall of Kelmend and the Bashkimi Canyon in Vermosh.
Dinner / Overnight in Lepushe
Starting the hiking to Maja e Vajushes at 8:00.
Maja e Vajushës is a "border mountain" in two respects: Not only does the (invisible) national border between Albania and Montenegro run along its summit ridge, but a (very clearly visible) border between karst and slate rock is also not far away. On the descent, you even hike exactly along this geological border several times on this tour.
The border location is also the reason for the special panorama that you enjoy at the summit: while the landscape to the west, north and east looks more like gentle low mountain ranges, to the south the rock towers and striking karst colossi of the Prokletje Mountains form a mountain horizon that is hard to beat in terms of wildness and drama. Many of the bold peaks in the "Albanian Alps" are almost inaccessible, but some of them can be climbed. The route to the summit of the imposing Maja Gosdines can be studied at leisure from Maja e Vajushës.
